The Martian by Andy Weir

The Martian by Andy Weir carries in its pages the spirit of human ingenuity and perseverance.

This is the story of Mark Watney, a NASA astronaut who finds himself stranded on the planet Mars, 140 million miles away from Earth. His ship is gone, the rest of his crew with it. He’s alone on a desolate world with no way to phone home. Worst of all, the only manned mission with any hope of reaching him will arrive in four years. Armed with his incredible sense of humor, stellar intellect, and uncanny ability to wing his way through any problem, Mark must endure on a planet that is dead set on killing him.

Of course, Watney isn’t the type to give in to impossible odds. When Mars starts rearing its ugly head, Mark responds in kind (MacGyver style).

“Problem is (follow me closely here, the science is pretty complicated), if I cut a hole in the Hab, the air won’t stay inside anymore.”- Mark Watney, The Martian

His wisecracking commentary will have you rolling in your seat with laughter, and his award-winning personality will have you rooting for him until the very end. Andy Weir has masterfully crafted a story that’s so full of heart, you’ll think about it each time you look up at the night sky.

On the surface, The Martian might appear to be your typical sci-fi adventure book, but it’s so much more than that. It’s a story about one man’s harrowing fight for survival and the millions of people on Earth fighting with him. At its core, this is a book about the human spirit, the basic instinct we all must help each other when the going gets tough. This is a book that comes around once in a lifetime, and it’s one you don’t want to miss. If you loved the 2000 hit movie Cast Away or the real-life event of Apollo 13, you will love Andy Weir’s The Martian.
