In a Galaxy Far, Far Away

This week, the Moniteau County Library headed off into a galaxy far, far away as we celebrated Star Wars!

On Tuesday evening, our tween group had a craft night! They got to take home personalized R2D2 pencil holder cups, and we broke out some perler beads for them to make magnets for their lockers or keychains for their backpacks! Some made light sabers, BB8, C3PO, or their own original creations.

Our Preschool pals enjoyed listening to Are You Scared, Darth Vader? by Adam Rex. This book is a blast, especially if your kids LOVE Star Wars! After we listened to the story, we made our own Yoda using basic shapes.

Our daycamp and Thursday evening friends got to become Jedis in our “Train Like a Jedi” camp. We listened to the story Everything I Learned in Life is from a Star Wars Little Golden Book. Then, we began our training camp. First, we had lightsaber training. They were each given a lightsaber (to make at home: use a paper towel tube and paint it blue or green, add a strip of duct tape at one end, and place a strip of black electrical or washi tape above the duct tape) and a balloon. The goal was to keep the balloon in the air. We let them practice for a few minutes, and then had a competition to see who could keep their balloon in the air the longest. Next came “Don’t Drop the Stormtrooper” in which they had to carry a “stormtrooper” across Heyssel Hall in this classic egg race game. Finally, we told them that Jedis have to know how to build a droid so they got to make their own droid to take home.

This project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
